First Supervisory Class
For the initial stages in my project i intend to work with my first supervisor in terms of accessibility to the class and the relevant speciality of the lecturer.
The first class seems to be a get to know each others projects and where eachy of us are so far and where we intend to go.
For myself i was currently just after a client meeting and going forward with the information i had gained at the meeting with the intention of diving straight into intial design work. i expect alot of chopping and changing so i hope to have a decent amount of design and concept art done within the next three weeks and present it to the client by mid march.
I stopped back after class to get feedback of the proposals. 60% :/ not the worst i suppose. only written feedback was i was too self critical. but im unsure how i lost so many marks on being self critical. I hope to kick the self critical habit by the time the VIVAS are here.
I discussed my concerns with my lecturer in regards to a few aspects of the meeting or the project so far. For example the clients from what i gather may want something that would to put it simply be not 'good design', which of course is part and parcel with client work, and will help with professional practice, however in this particular case i can't have my grade affected at the same time.
In terms of grading design can be extremely hit or miss, which of course can be very stressful as it can be very daunting that even if your work is considered well done it might not match the grading designers and lecturers tastes therefore have a lower grade.
I will strive to please both the client and my grade but i needed to know from someone who had been in the industry a good deal which i should prioritise, the designer in me says the client is the priority and the student in me says the university is the one who makes or breaks my final grade and future career prospects.
The lecturers advice? when dealing with an unsure client offer three style choices, and which ever one they choose pursue and constantly give choices but very narrowed down choices and in that way you are certain they are getting what they want in the end.
University and grades wise if shown you have developed and tried several strategies and options it shouldn't be negatively impacted for the style of the final outcome.
This is actually very reassuring and has given my design and research process a bit of a direction to go in.
Although i know the type of final product i could probably start designing i have to restrain myself and start at the very basics like every project i have done in the past so i can pursue every available option to create an excellent final product.
Next step, Supplies and sketch books !
