Initial Client Meeting

The Initial Client meeting has fallen on the same day as my first supervisory class, thankfully its a very late evening class and the clients are happy enough taking the meeting over lunch, saving everyone time and allowing me to still rush from Belfast to Derry (90.6 miles) in less than two hours via the creche and my mums office and still make my 5pm class by some unknown miracle.
Problem no.1 of the new semester, rescheduling childcare around the latest timetable.

Unlike my peers i can completely see how my supervisors were assigned, Justin for innovative product design and Padraic for his Graphic design expertise. Which i am very pleased with, i'm even more pleased at the fact Padraic is holding his supervisory classes from 5-7 PM, although at this time of year its an odd experience sitting in class in the dark, it is very beneficial for me as an artist as i always seem to do my best work later in the day, i feel i will benefit as a student alot more from such a late class compared to say a 9am class. The down side is no creche or childminder in their right minds will be available at such hours. Let's see how that one pans out, as its only week one it feels very up in the air and uncertain right now.

The meeting was held in a coffee shop near the clients office, and has been established so far as a decent meeting point for future catch ups and presentations, how this will work with my laptop and or a portfolio of concept work i have no clue as of yet.
Somewhere in between pleasantries and lunch orders we just dove in to the history of where this idea has come from.

To sum up statistics show most women never open their green notes, which is vital in awareness of early warning signs. I took notes like my life depended on it and offered very little other than 'oh' and 'ah' and the odd 'i understand' at this point. Soon 40 minutes had run by and they had fully explained their funding, colleagues, product wants and desires, i asked a few basic follow up questions regarding their expectations for the project.
Thankfully i had a chance to examine not only the product they were aiming for (England) but Scotland and Wales as well. all with their obvious yet minor faults.

The basic idea is something akin to the English maternity pack in terms of an end product, design wise it was uncertain and thats of course where i come in.
They would like to have public health messages in regards to pregnant women.

-smoking
-drinking
-vaccines
-drugs (prescribed and other)

There is currently a maternity collaborative across NI so its difficult to say what all needs to be on it incase anyone is stepping on another departments toes or worse is just relaying the exact same product, these are things we need to be certain of as the project goes on.

The collaborative is built on a very basic goal, Saving babies lives.
For example count the kicks is something the client would like to emphasis on one side of the pack.
The second side should back up the clients last campaign regarding breastfeeding and bonding, bonding doesn't start from birth, it begins in early pregnancy and studies show has health benefits for the child even into adolescents and adulthood.

The correlation on the parents mental health has a strong correlation with the babys mental health even years and years later, so bonding from the womb should be the second sides focus.

My hope for this product which the clients seem to like is that this pack shouldn't just be for the mothers but anyone of reading age within the household.
If the mother doesn't notice her symptoms maybe a father grandmother or existing child might.
So this to me is a society design not just antenatal.

I discussed time requirements, colour schemes and a few follow up brainstorming ideas i had had as they were explaining their perspective. I put the feelers out for future ideas and projects that could possibly coincide with this product, to understand my limits and focus points.
The most important thing in this meeting to me was to understand what they wanted and get contact details so i could go off and design and develop a number of ideas and contact them periodically before the next meeting. Past client work has taught me a quick PDF, email and phone call could speed up a project immensely compared to waiting around for the next meeting.

We all left with basic details, ground rules and the general idea of each others short term and long term goals.
I'm very optimistic about this project, and although simple in content for a final year project it should be a challenge to design for such an important user and so widely distributed.
