The Fully Expected Yet Lingering Lull

Welcome to the Lull between contact between university and the clients, no one seems to progress me forward in terms of design direction, it's one of those awkward situations where you need approval from both and possibly twice before progressing, and between lecture strikes (which i agree with), my carpal tunnel and the clients on leave. i'm in a lull!

Lull: noun

a temporary interval of quiet or lack of activity.

a pause, hiatus, suspension, intermission and much more.

Just to clarify i do not find it calming, soothing, a respite or in any way practical or useful as google dictionary has the audacity to suggest ... but its always fun to work on problem solving skills right?

So what can i do to be productive and not unnecessarily panic myself to the point i do nothing? well the answer is i'm not to sure, but i'll tell you what i am doing! (insert nervous but optimistic laughter here)

whether that's the right course of action i suppose only time and my grade will tell us.

If you can remember i had expected this Lull when setting out in the beginning of this project, as they can be quite common in live client projects, but i don't think me or anyone else involved thought it would be so early in the design process.

I have focused on developing experimental work as best i can so the clients can choose a design direction but until they do i will work on my personal brand. Which i will get into in more depth on a post of its own but for now my starting point and research is coming off where i left off from a branding project i did for a module in second year.

You can see within the sketch PDF attached at the end of this blog and the digital experiments on behance that it has begun by a play on my initials both in terms of a brand name and icon.

Infinity signs and chain links are a reoccurring style, as are the words creative and design.

I'm aiming for simple and iconic. I have recently begun attending leadership and business workshops, available mostly through the students union and the like, a reoccurring topic within them tends to be solid foundations during setup and that the chances are the brand and business will constantly be developing if it is to succeed, so many churn out several smaller brands and businesses before hitting the right niche. So the pressure is off to an extent in terms of commitment to this brand but i want my first step after graduation to be a solid one, in regards to both job position, pathway and association. what i put myself out there as is quiet important as its difficult to backtrack in the design industry's memory. Small and simple will work well for footers on work emails and any products such as this maternity pack which i will be putting my name and brand to.

I have played around with the idea of a bird. its simple and personal to myself. Name wise i'm totally lost, as most seem to be taken or just don't seem right but for now i'm developing the icon.

Although a cute little bird seemed so doable, now i have time to focus on it i feel i'm constantly making the same profile of a bird too short, too puffy, too realistic, too something every time. I think to actually develop the idea without starting from scratch and finding new problems each time i need to work on the idea digitally for more productive outcomes.
